"Judge not according to appearance, but judge right judgment" (John 7:24)
When Sgt. Friday pursued a lead, he demanded "just the facts." He waded through the appearance, cut through the opinions, and sought for reality. We, too, seek reality - facts.
Appearances, opinions and emotions are no substitute for facts. Occasionally, they uphold the facts. But quite often they supplant the truth, putting it in a stranglehold and begging for its submission.
Jesus demands we make correct judgments. "But," says one, "suppose sufficient facts in a matter are not available?" Then, at the very least, we must refrain from making a judgment and masquerading it as opinion. Such is the root of slander, gossip and other evils of the tongue and heart.
"Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see."
